How To Get A Child To Stop Sucking Their Thumb

Posted on April 9, 2021 by Liam Philipp

All children are born with an instinct to take root and suckle – this is what benefits them to feed even seconds after birth.

This feel can cause them to suck on their finger or thumb during their non-feeding times, as it calms them down and helps them feel safe. You can also look for the best thumb sucking prevention via https://www.amazon.co.uk/Age-2-7-Stop-Thumb-Sucking/dp/B00VQU2DZS.

Once they get used to thumb sucking, most children will eventually give up on their own. However, if they are between 2 and 4 years old and still going strong, you should consider taking action.

The main treatment for thumb sucking begins when the permanent teeth of the child enter. As the Pediatrics says:

If your child has sucked a lot of pacifiers, thumbs, or fingers for 2-4 years, this behavior can affect the shape of their mouth or the layout of their teeth.

If your child stops sucking on the pacifier, thumb, or finger before the permanent front teeth enter, there is a good chance that the bite will improve.

However, there are ways you can do to break the habit in a positive and healthy way.

Switch to positive reinforcement

Especially if you help them break their habit, when they've been doing it for a long time, they'll find they do it often without realizing it – so you need to be more vigilant and offer gentle and encouraging reminders.

Identify the trigger

Once you start really paying attention, you'll likely find that they have a particular trigger for the most part of thumb sucking.

Whether they are doing it to fall asleep while watching TV or to manage stress, figuring out what often drives the habit can help identify specific tactics to limit it.
